I det tidligere fiskeværet Nyksund, Nordland, i et nedlagt fiskeindustribygg, viste installasjonen levende bilder av havets overflate og «underflate» – en vannhinne og en overgangssone mellom det synlige og det umiddelbart usynlige.&nbsp;Installasjonen tar utgangspunkt i en situasjon fra lokalt sjarkfiske, sett både over og under havflaten. Veggens tekstur blir til bildets overflate, mens lyden som høres, er havets klang, påvirket av vær og vind. Gjennom meteorologiske data påvirkes både lyd og bilde, og installasjonen lever dermed i samspill med Nyksunds skiftende vær. &nbsp; Verket består av Elisabeth Bruns levende bilder og Rune Mikkelborgs lydarbeid. The project explores the ocean´s form and meaning through sound and moving image, and uses weather-data as to become a “living part” of the place itself. In the former fishing village of Nyksund, Nordland, within an abandoned fishing industry building, the installation presented moving images of the sea's surface and "subsurface" – a water membrane and a transitional zone between the visible and the immediately invisible. The installation draws from a local small-boat fishing scenario, observed both above and below the water's surface. The texture of the wall becomes the image's surface, while the sound heard is the sea's resonance, influenced by weather and wind. B. Pedersen, Rune Mikkelborg) The House of Broken Utopias is an evolving, immersive and interactive VR experience and archive exploring the function and failures of Utopias. Utopia here refers to desires and aspirations for a transformed existence − ethical signals manifested in artistic, societal, and cultural practices. How can artists and scholars receive and transmit these signals for future gain? The work centers on utopian visions embedded in Nyksund, Nordland, a former fishing village abandoned in the 1960s and 70s. Over time, locals and visitors envisioned varied futures for Nyksund, from nature reclamation to amusement hubs. "The International Nyksund Project" (1984-92) also emerged, driven by eco-political ideas from central Europe. Supported by the municipality of Øksnes and led by students from Technische Universität West-Berlin, they repaired houses and implemented sustainable solutions like windmills and solar-cell showers. Over 3000 young people from West Berlin and Europe participated. Their original and eventually “broken” plan, was to build an international "youth village" giving young people agency over their futures. “The International Nyksund Project” was central to Nyksund's survival, giving it an international flair due to the place´s concentration of utopian desires. HOUSE OF BROKEN UTOPIAS includes material from the Nyksund Berlin Artistic Archive (NBAA), preserving and reactivating the project's legacy. The VR experience explores layers of utopian desires embedded in Fryseriet − a modernist green cube for fish processing built in 1950. By the 1970s, it stood empty, mirroring Nyksund’s desolation. Fryseriet later offered a space for artists, housing exhibitions, concerts, and experiments. Today, it contains layers of signals pointing to diverse desires and activities envisioning various possible futures. The group emerged from the project «Nyksund Reloaded», which was initiated by the Oslo-based artist, filmmaker and researcher Elisabeth Brun and the Berlin-based media-artist and artistic researcher Katja Pratschke in 2022. Brun originates from a village close to Nyksund, Nordland. Pratschke lived as a young woman in 1980s West-Berlin. The NODES collective consists also of media artist and artistic researcher Gusztáv Hámos (Berlin/Budapest), Copenhagen-based sound artist Nicole B. Pedersen, Nyksund-based sound artist Rune Mikkelborg, and the Oslo-based 3D-artist Ivar Kjellmo. Kjellmo was also a participant in the “International Nyksund Project” in the late 1980s. past? "Nyksund Reloaded" is an international artistic research initiative that seeks to preserve and reactivate the legacy of "The International Nyksund Project" (INP) through media art and materials of the archive. The INP was an innovative socio-pedagogical and environmental programme that took place in Nyksund, a former fishing village in Northern Norway, between 1984 and 1992. The INP was a West-Berlin initiative that aimed to create an "international youth city" where young people were given agency over their own futures. Nyksund, once a thriving fishing village, was abandoned in the 1970s due to centralization policies and technological advancements in the fishing industry. As the village fell into decay, students and professors from the Technische Universität (TU) in West Berlin, with approval from the local community, moved to Nyksund to realize their vision. The project was groundbreaking for its time, developing innovative technological solutions for eco-living, such as windmills, biogas generators, and solar panels for Arctic conditions. It also pioneered new practice-led youth pedagogies and peace work through dialogue. The participants started from utter scratch as there were no infrastructure left at the site. Houses were repaired, and a community was established - by mere labor and grassroot organization. A Foundation called Quabs, an association of social pedagogues, enaged in including the local community. The overarching vision was to establish an "International Youth City"—an eco-utopia focused on sustainable living. Over 3,000 young people from West Berlin and across Europe participated in the project during its active years. In 1988, the International Nyksund Project was awarded the EU's Environmental Prize in the "Cultural Heritage" category, recognizing the project's innovative approach that integrated international understanding, environmental protection, cultural heritage preservation, and job security. The jury praised the project's "consistent and persistent pursuit of its goals" and its "rare combination of creativity and perseverance."* However, by the early 1990s, the project faced decline due to various challenges. Despite its significant role in Nyksund's survival and the development of a unique space that attracted both local and international visitors, the INP was largely forgotten. Its legacy remained scattered in the personal collections of former participants, with no formal archive established—until now. "Nyksund Reloaded" aims to revive the INPs legacy for future learning in our current era of ecological and political crises. The project involves gathering and systematizing a digital, searchable “artistic archive” of documents and images from former participants and others involved in the INP. This archive will serve as the foundation for new artistic and research-based works that explore and reinterpret the materials. Through media art, the project is developing innovative ways to immerse audiences in Nyksund and the INP's legacy, using technologies like Virtual Reality (VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). As part of its efforts, "Nyksund Reloaded" is using photogrammetry to digitize a former fish factory in Nyksund, transforming it into a digital space for exhibitions and learning. The project is also building a global network of similar initiatives, where art plays a pivotal role in revitalizing rural communities and facilitating the exchange of knowledge and experiences. Thus the Nyksund Reloaded Project consists of three core components: THE ARTISTIC ARCHIVE, THE ARENA, and the NETWORK. More details will be available soon through the links below. The journalist has quit – do it yourself” at&nbsp;4X4 – Tromsø Kunstforening / Tromsø Centre for Contemporary Art &nbsp;(2007), second edition. In 2007, as the popularity of Facebook gained momentum, this installation explored what would happen if the audience took over the role as journalist and editor. 4X4 was a 4-day international performative exhibition series with on performing, sound and visual art produced on site. Along the post-industrial waterfront, these crooked old trees grow where the riverbank meets the city, their root systems holding the soil together and preventing erosion. Their dry, brittle wood gives them their name: the “crack” of branches breaking off, drifting downstream, and taking root elsewhere. As curator Jasmine Hinks&nbsp;describes: “With an artistic process that draws attention to the relations between human and environment — and inviting us to be attentive to how we move through space, pause, observe and listen - Elisabeth Brun combines tools of documentary filmmaking and field recording, using contact microphones to gather narratives of living beings beyond the human.” The guided walk begins at Liljeholmsbron Square, lasts around 40 minutes, and ends at&nbsp;Färgfabriken.
